True death, “perma” death, happens when a character’s death is so dramatic that it serves everyone’s story to keep them dead… or when the death is so intense or ridiculous that there’s simply no way to explain their way out of, even with the cartoonish physics of the game world.īasically, the level of death or permanent injury your character takes should be relative to how it effects the story. (Or maybe we all keep re-spawning because it turns out we’re all synths, and our memories of Vault 76 are just an illusion?) In doing so, however, the character must forget everything that happened leading up to their death.Īnother option, since players can likely still speak through their mics when they die, is to simply declare themselves injured, with the re-spawn being just another part of the healing process. In most RP servers, when a character is killed, they are allowed to re-spawn and return. So what happens in a roleplay server when your character dies? There are several ways to deal with this! If everybody just keeps re-spawning and killing, stories lose their drama, players lose their immersion, and the fights become boring. What we don’t want though is any kind of situation where you kill somebody and then they immediately return to start shooting you again. But if a bunch of player characters form a gang and drag me out to the woods and take my head off and feed it to a mirelurk… Well, looks like its time to make a new character. Like if I get killed by a Mirelurk or something, I’m not going to die permanently. People put a lot of time and emotion into their characters, so if they want them so survive a death and continue on with their story, that is perfectly acceptable. The ultimate choice with whether or not a character will live or die lies with the player. Now this doesn’t mean you should play to lose, but a dramatic death or loss can in itself be a victory, if it makes the story better. One thing that sets a roleplay server apart from a regular server is the idea that its not about you or I winning or even surviving… it’s about the coolness of the storyline that’s happening. Will you be a traveling doctor? A wandering assassin? A cultist? A monster hunter? A Reporter? A P.I.? A successful caravan operator? The leader of a 50s-style greaser gang who feeds on them all? A cannibal restaurant owner who does the same, only literally?ĭealing with Death and Multiple Characters Will you help build new communities for all? Or rule as a madman from a tower? Will you be build churches? Or burn them to the ground? Will you help create a grand new America, shining and glorious? Or will you be shutting down all remnants of that evil empire to make sure it never returns? We want cool villains, not boring griefers. And that’s what we need to create in this game world.īecause of the nature of the game we’ll probably all start out as deadly adventurers, but I’m excited to see how this evolves as we gain control of the new world. What’s best about the Fallout series isn’t the game mechanics, its weird stories and weird characters drawing you ever further down the path to adventure. I think they’ve been inspired by all the roleplay communities popping up on modded versions of games like GTA V, Rust, and Conan: Exiles. They want people to create characters, create story. It’s clear from everything I’ve seen about Fallout 76 that the makers of this game are hoping to inspire people to roleplay. At least say “Ring-A-Ding-Ding” or something before you shoot!).
